Bonaparte referme le chapitre de la R\u00e9volution<\/h2>

Le 2 d\u00e9cembre 1804, en la cath\u00e9drale Notre-Dame de Paris,<\/b> Napol\u00e9on Bonaparte referme officiellement le chapitre de la R\u00e9volution fran\u00e7aise en posant lui-m\u00eame sur sa t\u00eate la couronne imp\u00e9riale. Pourtant, difficile d\u2019effacer d\u2019un trait de plume l\u2019h\u00e9ritage de 1789. Aussi, le nouveau ma\u00eetre des Fran\u00e7ais doit-il trouver de nouveaux symboles pour rallier la population \u00e0 ce r\u00e9gime \u00e0 la fois h\u00e9ritier de la R\u00e9volution et en rupture avec la R\u00e9publique.
Strat\u00e8ge avis\u00e9, Napol\u00e9on sait que la musique est un outil de coh\u00e9sion, non seulement pour les soldats, mais aussi pour un peuple tout entier. N\u2019appr\u00e9ciant gu\u00e8re La Marseillaise,<\/i> qu\u2019il juge trop marqu\u00e9e par les exc\u00e8s r\u00e9volutionnaires, il cherche un hymne capable d\u2019unir la nation, d\u2019exalter le sacrifice tout en restant solennel et martial. Veillons au salut de l\u2019Empire<\/i> remplit toutes ces conditions. Le texte, appel \u00e0 la vigilance et \u00e0 l\u2019union face aux menaces ext\u00e9rieures, contraste avec La Marseillaise<\/i>, qui pr\u00f4ne la r\u00e9volte et l\u2019insurrection. Lui, en revanche, se pr\u00e9sente comme un serment de loyaut\u00e9 envers les nouvelles institutions.<\/p>

Le chant de la Grande Arm\u00e9e<\/h2>

Bien que Veillons au salut de l\u2019Empire<\/i> devienne l\u2019hymne officiel, Napol\u00e9on ne renonce pas pour autant au Chant du d\u00e9part<\/i>, hymne d\u2019\u00c9tat compos\u00e9 en 1794 par Marie-Joseph Ch\u00e9nier et \u00c9tienne M\u00e9hul. La raison ? Ces deux chants sont compl\u00e9mentaires. Le premier, r\u00e9serv\u00e9 aux grands \u00e9v\u00e9nements, incarne la solennit\u00e9 imp\u00e9riale, tandis que le second, chant de guerre motivant et cher \u00e0 la Grande Arm\u00e9e, reste celui des soldats.<\/p>

Apr\u00e8s la chute de Napol\u00e9on en 1815, Veillons au salut de l\u2019Empire sombre dans l\u2019oubli.
